Welcome to Grade 8 Media Literacy

Use the Class One PowerPoint Presentation to introduce the course and play the Media Literacy People Bingo game to get to know the students.

Use the Class Two PowerPoint Presentation to quickly discuss classroom rules and routines and than have the students try to login using their student number and last year's last password. Discuss the importance of not forgetting passwords and how to remember your password all year. Finally, show students how to save their work in their HOME DRIVE and give them time to practise this skill. Also, introduce the idea of an Online Media Locker in the form of a Blog.

Here is an example of a Media Locker Blog. Students who successfully create and maintain a Media Locker Blog are more likely to get an A or A+.

•This year I am challenging all grade 7 and 8 students to create their own VIRTUAL MEDIA LOCKER ONLINE.
•Your online media locker should have the following:
ALL YOUR MEDIA LITERACY PROJECTS OVER THE YEAR
REFLECTIONS (JOURNAL ENTRIES) ABOUT THE TOPICS COVERED OVER THE YEAR
LINKS TO RELEVENT WEBSITES ABOUT THE TOPICS COVERED OVER THE YEAR.
While I use blogger.com to create my blog, you may use any free online websites or blogs.

A Review of the 5 Key Concepts and the Media Triangle

Two frameworks are used to help you understand media messages.

The first is the 5 Key Concepts of Media Literacy.

The second is the Media Studies Triangle which examines 3 different points of view (the Media Text, the Audience, and the Production) in order to gain more meaning. All 3 points of view must be considered to fully understand the media text's meaning.

Term One: Analyse One Media Text

ANALYSE ONE MEDIA TEXT OF YOUR CHOICE USING THE MEDIA TRIANGLE OR THE 5 KEY CONCEPTS


Choose one media text of your choice (i.e. a movie, tv show, commercial, poster, ad, magazine, game, song, music video, book, comic, etc.) and analyse it using the Media Triangle or the 5 Key Concepts. You will be expected to show the media text to the class (obviously not an entire movie but maybe the trailer for example) and answer some of the questions on anyone of the following worksheets.

The 5 Key Concepts:


5 Key Concepts of Media Literacy Poster has the 5 Key Questions you must answer.
1. Who created this message?
2. What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?  
3. How might different people understand this message differently?
4. What values, lifestyles and points of view are represented in, or omitted from, this message?
5. Why is this message being sent?

Each student will be expect to complete one of the worksheets and present it orally to the class.

AFTER ALL THAT..... IF U ARE STILL CONFUSED, FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS:

1. Choose a "professional" media text to analyse (song, movie, video, tv show, etc.)

2. Use the Media Triangle or the 5 Core Concepts and answer the questions

3. Create your presentation using PowerPoint, a Blog, MovieMaker, PhotoShop or MS Word

4. Embed Your Video from YouTube (I can help you with that) into PowerPoint or Blog

5. Present to Class

Term Two: Learn to Use Audacity!

We will learn to use Audacity together in various ways:

1. Experiment with the program. Give students time to play with the program.

2. Use some online help resources:

a) Atomic Learning has a number of tutorials about the program (user name: ppsb password: atomic)

b) YouTube is always a great place to find video tutorials. Here is just one....

Term Two: Audacity Rap or Radio Ad

Introduce the project for term two.....

Let's keep this assignment simple. In a group of no more than 3 or 4, decide if you want to do a radio ad, public service announcement, or rap. Now you need a topic....

You will construct a political and/or social message using Audacity for morning announcements. The message must be relevant to our school (issues such as street safety, littering, bullying, fighting, stealing, cheating, being disrespectful, wasting class time, being a good citizen, doing well at school, etc.).

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
1. CHOOSE A GROUP (1, 2, 3 or 4 students)
2. CHOOSE A TOPIC (see topics above)
3. CHOOSE A METHOD OF COMMUNICATION (i.e. rhym, rap, song and/or skit)
4. Work on Content First: Research, Write and Rewrite
5. Choose a beat or background music and save it as a WAV file
If you find your music on You Tube you can use a converter to export it into a mp3 file to import into Audacity or Myna.
6. Rehearse (practice) a lot before recording
7. Than start recording using a microphone or personal recorder.
8. Than edit using Audacity or Myna (online editing software)
9. Save and share with class. The best projects may be shared on our school website or on the morning announcements!

Term Three: Introduction to Movie Making and PSA's

First Class:

Show the book "Movie Making" and discuss the various roles....


What part of making of movie would you want?

Writer, Actor, Camera Person, Director, Editor, Special Effects, etc....




Show the video "Track Stars" from Scanning Television.



Next Class:

Introduce the concept of PSA's showing some Kid's Help Phone Commercials and some Anti-Bullying projects done last year.

Term Three: Using the Video Camera and Video Editing

Here is where you will post a few lessons on using the video camera and video editing....

Term Three: Anti-Bullying PSA Video Project

Students will be asked to create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) about "bullying".
Culminating Task is PSA on Bullying in the form of a video (Movie Maker) or photo essay (Photo Story)


1st Decide Who You Want to Work With (no more than 4-5 students)
2nd Decide on Project (Video or PhotoStory)
3rd Decide on An Idea
4th Complete the Planning Sheet and Storyboard
5th Video Tape All Your Footage or Take Your Pictures
6th Edit Video Using MovieMaker or Photos Using PhotoStory
